Harvest Road Safety

Federation Council is home to one of the largest grain storage sites in NSW at Oaklands.

The Benalla to Oaklands rail line which runs across Victoria to the New South Wales border and beyond, operates from late Spring to early Autumn, transporting grain during the harvest season to support local farmers. It is a freight-only railway line that enters our Local Government area at Mulwala and runs through several rural areas in the south-west of Federation Council en route to Oaklands.

For your safety, Council would like to remind road users and pedestrians to look out for trains at all times, especially during harvest season, and follow the road rules when crossing the railway line, which means coming to a complete stop, looking and listening for trains and only crossing when it’s safe to do so.

When you get to a level crossing always assume a train is coming. Whether it's boom gates, flashing lights or stop signs at a level crossing, they all require you to be vigilant.
