The Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021 was adopted at Council's monthly meeting yesterday.

The Disability Inclusion Action Plan was developed through a community consultation and research process, which included review of Council documents and Government policy.

The consultation process involved talking to regional and local service providers, as well as people with a disability and disability carers.

Agency meetings and focus groups were also held to identify gaps and discuss issues and a community survey conducted.

Federation Council Administrator Mike Eden said Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021 outlines its commitment to addressing the physical and attitudinal barriers that people with a disability face on a daily basis.

“Federation Council strongly believes a community that supports and celebrates people of all abilities is a better community for everyone,” he said.

“The plan aims to promote positive attitudes and behaviours in the community, to provide better access to information, services and facilities, to provide a more liveable and accessible community, to enhance employment opportunities and to increase opportunities for people with disability to participate.”

Developed in accordance with the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014, the plan sets out Council’s actions to support inclusion of people with a disability. It builds on Council’s Ageing Well Strategy (2013) and Pedestrian Access Mobility Plan (2011).

The plan covers four main areas:

  • Developing Positive Community Attitudes and Behaviours
  • Creating Liveable Communities
  • Supporting Access to Meaningful Employment
  • Improving Access to Mainstream Services through Better Systems and Processes.
