Federation Council and Corowa District Landcare sign MOU

Federation Council and the Corowa District Landcare have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalise the current working relationship for on the ground local natural resource management and conservation initiatives in the region.
Federation Mayor, Councillor Patrick Bourke said, “Corowa District Landcare is a key partner of Federation Council and this relationship provides environmental opportunities for both organisations.”
“Corowa District Landcare was previously a section 355 Committee supported under the former Corowa Shire Council for approximately 20 years. In 2016, there was a change in governance structure when they became an incorporated and appointed a Landcare Coordinator.”
“Council has supported them through this transition and will continue to do so with the signing of the MOU. The MOU outlines the areas that Council and Corowa and District Landcare will work together on which includes a number of conservation, natural resource management and sustainable agriculture initiatives,” he said.
The key priorities for the two organisations over the next 5 years include:
- Setting up seed production and collection sites.
- Community events and activities (such as National Tree Day, Aussie Backyard Bird Count, Threatened Species Day etc).
- Conservation works and revegetation at Council managed sites, roadsides, parks and reserves.
- Work to protect local threatened species such as Sloane's Froglet.
- Community awareness, education and workshops to encourage participation in local conservation and sustainable farming and agricultural practices.
The MOU includes a financial contribution of $5,000 per year and commitment to partner and deliver local initiatives over the next five (5) years, 1 January 2020 until 31 December 2024.
