Flooding Sources

The Federation Villages Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan manages the flood risk from both local overland flow flooding and mainstream flooding.

Local overland flow flooding is associated with rainfall runoff from within and in close proximity to the townships.  This type of flooding is often referred to as ‘flash flooding’ due to the short warning times.  This type of flooding rises and recedes over a short period of time.  The floodwaters are usually relatively shallow and fast moving.

Mainstream flooding is associated with floodwater being conveyed by major flow paths such as creeks and well defined depressions.  The warning times are typically quite long due to the distance travelled to reach the impacted town.  It can take hours, days or even weeks for flooding to peak.
