October 2025

Council has an ongoing program of capital works and upgrades to buildings, parks, playgrounds and roads across the Federation Council Region. The following activities were undertaken during October 2025 by Federation Council’s Operations Works teams. 

Table Drain Maintenance 

With the dry weather this month a focus was clearing town table drains as a focus in Howlong.

Clearing table drains on rural roads and customer requests as received.

Sealed Roads

Numerous customer requests for pothole repairs on sealed urban and rural roads have been received with many actioned with the Corowa based Flo-Con patching truck and the Urana based Jet Master patching truck.

Main areas of focus have been Spring Drive, Federation Way, Merton Road, Emu Park Road, Bull Plain Road, Savernake Road, and townships.

Slashing – Sealed Roads Shoulders

Slashing is being carried out on Back Berrigan Road and Greenvale Road in the North.

In the South the following roads have been completed:

  • Hopefield Road
  • Federation Way from Daysdale to Riverina Highway
  • Balldale Oil Tree Lagoon Road
  • Mahonga Lane
  • Daysdale/Walbundrie Road
  • Hopefield Siding Road

Quarries

After significant gravel use of Doctors Road, a dozer is required to win more gravel from the screen pit at Urana for further gravel re-sheeting works.

Balldale – Drill /Blast and Crushing preparation of 30,000 tons of 20mm material ready for re-sheeting projects.

Davies Hill – Drill /Blast and Crushing preparation of 20,000 tons of 20mm material.

Carting Gravel for various projects for the Grader Team for maintenance grading.

Savernake Road -Shoulder Re-Sheeting

Work involved cutting out the existing shoulders, and reusing and compacting the existing insitu material improving drainage where possible.The aim of the works is to enhance road safety, accessibility, and the long-term sustainability of the road network. 

Maintenance Crew/Sundry Crew

  • Culvert cleaning/Repairs.
  • Footpath maintenance/repairs.
  • Sign replacements/repairs.
  • Various guide post and general sign replacements.
  • Working with construction crews when required.
  • Attending to customer requests.

Sapling Removal Program from Rural Drains 

This important program has recommenced ensuring small saplings in Council’s drainage rural drainage network do not get to a size that affects water flow.

Heavy Trucks

  • Carting gravel from Urana screen pit to Doctors Road re-sheeting.
  • Carting gravel from customer requests of maintenance grading.
  • Carting stone for patching trucks, Flocon and Jetmaster.
  • Carting gravel for customer requests.

Line Marking Program

With the fine weather leading into the month, we have recommenced our line-marking program. This includes Savernake, Mulwala, Oaklands, Corowa, and surrounding areas.

Safety works identified by the Road Safety Audit and transport forum at the intersection of Bullecourt Road and Whitehead Street have been addressed. The works included:

  • Install double barrier centre lines with yellow RRMPs on both approaches to the intersection of Bullecourt Road
  • Install current standard GIVE WAY holding lines
  • enhanced cross road junction intersection warning signs on all approaches to the intersection and installed centre line marking along the 4.5km section of the audit route.

TfNSW – RMCC 

Maintenance works under the RMCC agreement.

With the fine weather leading into next month, the works of tree maintenance, signage, pothole patching, shoulder weed spraying.

Corowa Aerodrome 

Twice weekly inspections undertaken that ensure compliance with the MOS 139.

Council has received its Surveillance Report from CASA. A total of 6 Safety Observations were identified in the report. Of more concern, a total of 12 Safety Findings were also identified in the report.

The Safety Findings and Safety Observations have been responded to by staff in the required CASA timeframes.

Staff now have to consider ways to budget to rectify the Safety Findings, and with CASA’s permission, this funding will be identified in the 26/27 draft budgets for Council’s consideration. It is noted Safety Findings rectification works cannot be ignored as that may place the airport at risk of closure.

  • Attend Call Outs.

Landfills

  • Howlong: Ongoing investigation for potential construction of another waste cell.
  • Corowa: Business as usual.
  • Mulwala: Business as usual.
