Capital Works Program Update - March 2024

Council has an ongoing program of capital works and upgrades to buildings, parks, playgrounds and roads across the Federation Council Region. The following activities were undertaken during March 2024 by Federation Council’s Operations Works teams. 

The teams diligently executed various initiatives, aiming to advance critical projects and address community needs. A comprehensive overview of the undertaken activities is provided below:

Footpath Maintenance Program

  • Footpath repair program continued, focusing on trip hazards and high pedestrian traffic areas.

Roadside Slashing

  • Focused slashing activities near Urana, Rand and Morundah this month.

Fixing Local Roads (FLR) Round 4 – Whitehead Street Corowa Rehabilitation

  • Works commenced on the first 800m section of Whitehead Street from Riverina Highway. Road formation, add 150mm gravel pavement and sealing.

Roads To Recovery (RTR) Grant Funding

  • Merton Road – between Redlands Road and Freyers Road, Rehabilitation works continued.
  • Merton Road – next 400m section adjacent to Mygunyah Lane/Roma Grange Road commenced.

Sealed Roads

  • Numerous customer requests for pothole repairs on sealed urban and rural roads have been received and actioned with the Corowa based Flocon patching truck and the Urana based Jet Master patching truck.
  • Work is continuous on all roads such as: Federation Way south/north, Jerilderie Road, Boree Road, Urana/Boree/Morundah/Oakland and Rand township and rural roads.

Maintenance Crew/Sundry Crew

  • Culvert installations / repairs
  • Patching with cold mix
  • Sign replacements
  • Guild posts / signage
  • Footpath maintenance
  • General maintenance in townships
  • Working on both construction jobs when needed
  • Flood damage repairs
  • Fulfilling customer requests
  • Floating plant throughout the shire
  • Operating loader in pits and stock piles
  • Table drain maintenance
  • Roadside sucker removal/spraying

Heavy Trucks

  • RLRRP – gravel carting for shoulder rehabilitation.
  • RTR – gravel carting for heavy patching and rehabilitation.
  • Carting stone for patching trucks, Flocon and Jetmaster.
  • Carting excess spoil from Mulwala to Corowa Landfill for cover & capping.

TfNSW – RMCC

  • Maintenance works under the RMCC agreement continued in March.

Quarries

Planning is well under way for the next phase of blast and crushing at the Balldale and Daysdale quarries. The gravels will be used for upcoming RLRRP, R2R and capital works programs. Awaiting contractor.

Corowa Aerodrome

  • Upgrade 60 metre section of old and rusted out twin corrugated iron drainage pipes that was causing sinkholes on the grass runway strip on the southern side of Runway 14/32. Replaced with twin 450mm RRJ class 4 concrete pipes.
  • Twice weekly inspections carried out to ensure compliance with the MOS 139. Repairs to lights as required. Herbicide spraying on runway shoulders and around wind indicators.
  • Slashing of grass runways to meet MOS 139 compliance, surrounds also slashed to suppress weeds and reduce fire risk.

Covid 19

One Outdoor Operations staff member was affected during March.
