A round of applause and three loud cheers echoed through the school hall at St Marys Corowa special Thankyou Assembly today.

The school invited emergency service response staff to thank them for their assistance while attending to a fire in the school’s classroom on the last day of term two in June.

Students were on their lunch break when flames appeared in a classroom on the second floor building about 1.30pm.

The 114 students and eight staff assembled at an evacuation point on school grounds before moving to the Corowa RSL Park across the road.

Council staff assisted emergency services in traffic control while the fire was contained and eventually extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW Station 268 firefighters and assisting crews.

Thankyou cards signed by the school’s students were presented to representatives from the Corowa Police Station, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 268, NSW Ambulance and Federation Council.

Federation Council General Manager Chris Gillard who attended the special assembly alongside other Council staff commended all community members involved.

“Safety of our community members is always paramount and thanks to the quick response of emergency service crews and school staff over 120 people were evacuated promptly and most importantly safely,” he said.

“This is a fine example of community service groups working together and the result is something all involved should be very proud of.

“Thank you to the students and staff of St Marys Corowa for presenting Council with such a thoughtful gift, what an honour it is to be included in your Special Assembly.”
