True Blue Exhibition by Wayne 'Wombat' Birrell

Corowa Art Space is delving into the extensive catalogue of Wayne Birrell, uncovering over 40 works that celebrate Australia's heritage, character, and the beauty of things weathered by time in the upcoming exhibition, "True Blue." The exhibition name reflects the Aussie slang for all things authentic with genuine Aussie spirit—a fitting choice, too, as Wayne notes, "I was a ginger boy named Blue."

Wayne M. Birrell, known to many as "Wombat," is a Howlong-based artist living on the banks of the mighty Murray River. He works primarily in watercolour—an interest sparked early by artist Rob Wade—while also embracing acrylics for his larger pieces.

After a long career in the Australian Army, which involved significant travel both at home and abroad, Wayne spent years seeing the world without always having time to truly absorb it. In his 50s, he and his wife set out to rediscover that missed beauty, travelling extensively around Australia in their beloved "Wombat" van for over 25 years and 500,000 kilometres. Along the way, a simple set of watercolours sparked a creative journey that has now spanned more than two decades.

Drawn to rusty relics, heritage pieces, and scenes rich with Australian spirit, Wayne's art reflects nostalgia, character, and deep connection. He has donated works to various charities, completed numerous commissions, and has proudly tutored the talented Howlong Art Group.

As a cause close to his heart, Wayne is donating half of all proceeds from the sale of his work to Legacy. This iconic Australian charity has been dedicated for over 100 years to supporting the families of deceased and seriously injured veterans.

Wayne believes painting teaches us to truly see—and nothing pleases him more than knowing his work hangs in someone's home. All works from the exhibition will be available for purchase.

True Blue is open from 21 July to 5 September. Gold coin donations to Legacy are appreciated for entry. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 9.30am to 4.30pm, and Saturday from 10am to 2pm. Corowa Art Space is located at the Corowa Civic Centre, 100 Edward Street, Corowa.
