Balldale Water Supply Community Meeting

Yesterday Federation Council facilitated a community meeting in Balldale to discuss the future options that relate to improving the town’s water supply.  Around 30 community members were in attendance along with the Mayor, several Councillors, along with Council staff, to discuss possible improvements to the towns untreated bore supply scheme. 

Over recent years, Council has received feedback from the Balldale community advising of concerns and dissatisfaction with the current water supply so the meeting was organised to discuss and present future water supply improvement options for Balldale, listen to community feedback and allow time for a general discussion with residents. 

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Patrick Bourke said, “It was great to see a good number of community members attend the meeting.  We were able to talk about the current issues and look for potential solutions, and it was of course interesting to hear the mixed views as to the issues with the current supply, and of the possible improvements. Council had previously commissioned the NSW Department of Commerce Water Solutions Department to undertake a Feasibility Study for the provision of a treated water supply for Balldale. That report provided six options for consideration.” 

“Further investigation has occurred in relation to one of the options, which recommended finding an alternative local source of groundwater other than the current bore, which meets all water quantity and quality requirements, disinfecting it with UV or chlorination, and then pumping it to Balldale. A test bore has been drilled which has shown promising results.  Once further analysis of that is completed, a strategy will be developed based on what results are the most feasible and acceptable to the community. This will include implementation and budget considerations and of course looking for funding assistance from State and or Federal Governments.”
