Over 4000 people enjoyed a jam packed afternoon of fun yesterday at the Festival of Fun for Kids, hosted by Federation Council.

In keeping with the events storybook theme, children from across the region arrived at the Corowa Race Course dressed as their favourite storybook characters. The costume parade provided an opportunity for children to come together and proudly show off their great costumes to festival goers.

PJ Masks were a huge hit and hundreds of excited children patiently waited to meet and have their photo taken with the popular characters.

The Vegetable Plot band entertained the audience throughout the day, bringing lots of energy and humour to the main stage. The event also showcased a variety of local emerging artists, whose talents were on display throughout the day on the main stage and buskers circuits.

Animals of Oz attracted an audience of curious people who were eager to learn about a range of animals including crocodiles, lizards, frogs and birds. The interactive display was a popular part of the event program, as people of all ages gathered to take part.

The emergency services area proved popular again this year, with children excited about the opportunity to explore the vehicles and interact with their local heroes from the Police, Fire Service and Ambulance.

People of all ages worked on their circus skills, with the Fruit Fly Circus hosting workshops throughout the day and helping people to master juggling, diabolo and hula hooping.

Local schools, community groups and service providers also attended the event and provided a range of interactive and engaging activities for children to take part in. With everything from slime and rock painting, to packing beads and musical instruments, there was hours of fun on offer.

Federation Council Mayor, Pat Bourke praised the efforts of the various groups involved including Intereach, Corowa Preschool, Mainly Music, Country Buddies, St Mary’s Primary, Goodstart Early Learning Centre, Corowa Girl Guides, Blue Earth Foundation, the Corowa Visitor Information Centre and Federation Council Libraries.

“It was excellent to see so many groups supporting this great community event and we thank them for their involvement,” Mayor Bourke said.

“We are very proud to host this event and provide an opportunity to not only bring together and entertain families, but to also showcase the fantastic range of services available in the area.”

Council had been successful in receiving a grant through the NSW Government’s Country Arts Support Program to run a series of lantern making workshops with local schools in the lead up to the Festival of Fun for Kids. Children then participated in a lantern parade to display their creations and conclude yesterday’s event.

The Festival of Fun for Kids would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors and volunteers.

Federation Council would like to thank community partner Uncle Toby’s and festival friends Bourke Hire, Corowa Race Club, Corowa P A & H Society and Focus Engineering for sponsoring the event.

The event was also well supported by groups such as the Corowa Men’s Shed, Corowa Events Committee and Corowa Friends of the Library, as well as Council staff who volunteered their time throughout the day to ensure the smooth running of the event.
