Federation Council is seeking community feedback on a proposal from the Lowe Square Management Committee to remove the existing BMX dirt track at the reserve in Lowe Square, Howlong. The primary goal is to free up space for much-needed overflow car parking during major sporting events and high-use periods.

The Lowe Square Committee has raised the issue of the current track at several meetings, noting that it is outdated, in poor condition, and no longer meets the needs of the community.

While the immediate action proposed is the removal of the track to convert the area into overflow parking, the Committee also supports a plan to replace the facility with a modern alternative into the future if grant funding becomes available:

  • Removal for Parking: The existing track area will be converted to overflow car parking to ease congestion on busy days.

  • Future Pump Track: The Committee would like to see a new Pump Track constructed in a different location within Lowe Square, specifically near the Flying Fox, which is a popular area for families. This future project would require external funding to be sourced.

The proposal is strongly supported by the Lowe Square Committee, with input also received from Howlong Primary School indicating a preference for a future modern pump track facility.

Council is inviting residents to have their say on the proposed BMX Track removal.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook said Lowe Square is one of Howlong’s busiest venues, and overflow parking is a constant challenge for our user groups.

“This proposal is about finding a smart, two-part solution for Howlong,” she said.

“The current BMX track is genuinely outdated, and converting that space into overflow car parking addresses a practical and persistent problem for Lowe Square, especially during busy local events. We urge everyone to complete the survey - your feedback will help us make a decision on the proposal.”

This consultation opportunity is open from Monday, November 3 to 5pm, Monday, December 1, 2025. Complete the online survey on Council’s website here
