The following activities were undertaken during January 2026 by Federation Council’s Operations Works teams.
Sundry Gang Urana
Urana’s Sundry gang has been carrying out maintenance tasks over the month of January.
The team has been performing numerous signage maintenance tasks in the northern region, specifically across Morundah, Boree Creek, Oaklands, and Rand. Additionally, the following works have been completed:
- Doctors Road Bridge - Removal of vegetation.
- Boree Creek - Cleaning of vegetation and gutters at Ormes Road and Richmond Street.
- Gaffney Street, Oaklands - Cleaning of gutters.
- Guide post on Cocketgedong Road, Federation Way north and Boree Creek.
Maintaining this infrastructure remains a priority to ensure the continued resilience and connectivity of the region.
In these areas, effective maintenance is critical to preventing premature and costly road failures. Furthermore, consistent upkeep reduces the risk of isolating communities, which is particularly vital given the increased frequency of natural disasters and the high cost of full reconstruction.
Sealed Roads
Preparation works for the 2025-26 reseal program are currently underway for both the North and South regions.
In preparation for this program, the Jet Patcher and Flowcon are inspecting the sections and undertaking any necessary minor maintenance or pothole repairs in the lead-up to the reseal works. The reseal works are scheduled to commence in March and April.
The sections being prepared for resealing include:
- Bong Street, Rand
- Kindra Street, Rand
- Kennedy Street, Howlong (from Townsend Street to Read Street)
- Larmer Street, Howlong (from Clarke Street to Victoria Street)
- Townsend Street (from Kennedy Street to Emily Street)
- Walker Street, Corowa (from Gitchell Street to Whitehead Street)
- Strontian Road (from Ormes Road to the end)
- Sandigo Road, Boree Creek (from Boree Creek Road to the end)
- Yamma Road
- Savernake Road (5 sections)
- Merton Road (from Humeden Road to Summerglen Road)
- Mahonga Lane (from Balldale Coreen Road to the end)
Quarries
Davy’s Hill, Daysdale – Carting 5,000 tons for the re-sheeting of Narrow Plains Road.
Council operates both quarries primarily to gain a reliable, cost-effective source of essential construction materials for local infrastructure of maintenance grading and capital projects.
Davies Hill – crushing will begin in Mid-February for 28,000 tons.
Maintenance Crew/Sundry Crew
Responding to urgent customer requests during peak tourist seasons requires proactive staffing, clear communication, and planning from their overseer to handle high-volume foot traffic.
Footpath Maintenance
A significant number of footpath inspections, repairs, and improvements were conducted throughout December and January. These works included both proactive maintenance and responses to customer requests, with projects completed in Mulwala, Urana, Corowa, and Howlong.
Additionally, interim safety improvements have been implemented along the road shoulder on Riesling Street in Corowa. These works provide better separation between vehicles and pedestrians accessing the walking trails and facilities at Bangarang and Ball Parks.
Heavy Trucks
- Carting gravel from Davey’s Hill Quarry to Merton Road stockpile site.
- Carting gravel for customer requests of maintenance grading.
- Carting stone for patching trucks and Jetmaster.

Corowa Aerodrome
Twice weekly inspections carried out to ensure compliance with the MOS 139. Weed spraying and slashing planned on runway shoulders and to the wind indicators.
Grader Teams Capital/Maintenance Works Program
Please Note: Maintenance Grading in the north is all subject to weather conditions. Due to the extreme heat and lack of rainfall in the north, water levels have dropped significantly at the creek where we typically draw water. As a result, team leaders have planned for the two graders to work out of Morundah for the month of January.
Upcoming grader training is scheduled for February 23, 24, and 25. This program is designed for our four current grader operators, along with three additional staff members as part of our ongoing succession plan.
This initiative is a positive step that demonstrates the council's commitment to future staff development. Our goals for this training include increasing staff productivity, fostering a better understanding of the council's road network conditions across all levels, and ensuring a consistent approach to maintenance grading. The program is primarily targeted at upskilling existing operators to enhance satisfaction and performance in our road maintenance operations.
The training will focus on several key areas, including:
- Forming, upgrading, and maintaining roads
- Mixing and spreading materials
- Scarifying and ripping
- Cutting and trimming table drains
- Trimming road sub-grades and pavements
- Site clean-up
Ultimately, this session will provide essential upskilling specifically tailored to maintenance grading.
