Federation Council is highlighting disability access and inclusion throughout November for its annual Federation DisABILITY Month. Hosted by the Federation Disability Access and Inclusion Committee, the month-long initiative aims to raise awareness, provide information, and educate the community on the role everyone plays in supporting one another.

With over 20% of Australians living with a disability, many people in the community likely face daily challenges related to access and inclusion. DisABILITY Month serves as a reminder that we all have a role in fostering a sense of belonging and wellbeing for everyone.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook said a key focus for the month is ensuring public pathways are safe and accessible. Council is reminding residents of the importance of property maintenance, as overgrown vegetation can create significant barriers.

"With spring in full swing, Council encourages residents to ensure community safety by keeping properties regularly maintained now and into the future," said Mayor Cook.

“Overgrown shrubs, low-hanging branches, and encroaching weeds can make footpaths difficult or impossible for individuals using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, or walkers. These obstacles also pose serious tripping hazards for people with visual impairments. Property owners can play a crucial role by regularly trimming vegetation away from footpaths, ensuring everyone can travel safely and independently.”

Residents are invited to get actively involved by joining a community streetwalk in Howlong on Thursday, 27 November.

The walk, which commences at 1pm, will bring together community members, the Federation Disability Access and Inclusion Committee, and Council’s Infrastructure team. Participants will identify what is working well regarding access and discuss potential improvements to public amenities. The walk will travel along Hawkins Street (from Sturt Street to Hovell Steet) and may also visit the Howlong Recreation Reserve. No RSVPs are required just meet at the Howlong Bakery at 1 pm.

DisABILITY Month will culminate with the International Day of People with Disability on 3 December, which this year carries the UN theme: "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future".

Federation Council encourages all residents to contribute. This can be as simple as cutting back vegetation from footpaths or as involved as joining the Federation Disability Access and Inclusion Committee. The committee, comprised of community members and organisations, provides essential feedback to Council and always welcomes new members interested in making a difference.

Other resources available to the community include the NSW Companion Card program, which provides free entry for a carer when a cardholder buys a ticket at select venues , and the Accessible Australia app, which provides information on accessible local businesses and venues.

Further information on the committee, the Companion Card, and other resources are available here.
