Urana and Morundah Flood Mitigation Design Projects

Federation Council at its May 2025 meeting resolved to publicly exhibit the draft detailed designs for the Urana levee upgrade and the Morundah flood mitigation designs. The draft designs will be on public exhibition for a period of 28 days from 16 July to 13 August 2025.

The flood mitigation works at Urana and Morundah were recommended by the Federation Villages Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan adopted by Council in 2022. The detailed designs have been prepared by the consulting firm Dryside Engineering for Council.

The Urana Levee Upgrade project involves upgrading and extending the existing 1.2 km levee. The upgraded levee will be 2.2 km in length, located predominantly on unused road reserve. The average levee height will be approximately 1.8 metres. The levee will provide protection from riverine flooding (Urangeline Creek and Billabong Creek).

The Morundah project involves the design of a 660 metres long diversion bund to protect against local runoff induced flooding originating from east of the township.  The bund will generally be approximately 0.6 metres high.  A new large capacity culvert to discharge local runoff flows through the Colombo Creek levee bank at the stormwater pump station site is also being designed.

• Paper copies of the Urana levee upgrade design drawings are available for viewing at Council’s William Street Urana office.
• Paper copies of the detailed design drawings for the Morundah flood mitigation measures are available for viewing at the Morundah Hotel.
• Attending community information meetings to be held as follows:
  • Urana Levee Upgrade Design project – meeting to be held at Urana Bowling Club, William Street, Urana, commencing at 7.00pm on Wednesday 30 July 2025.
  • Morundah Flood Mitigation Design project – meeting to be held at Paradise Palladium Theatre, Browley Street, Morundah, commencing at 7.00pm on Thursday 31 July 2025.
