Capital Works Program Update - December 2021 & January 2022

Council has an ongoing program of capital works and upgrades to buildings, parks, playgrounds and roads across the Federation Council Region.

The following activities were undertaken within the months of December 2021 and January 2022 by Federation Council’s Works teams.

  • Fixing Local Roads Program – Traffic Facilities: Continue audit of signs & guideposts for upgrade/replacement in urban streets and rural roads throughout Federation Council. Continue replacement program of signs & guideposts.
  • Settlers Road Upgrade - Resume works after Christmas New Year break. Place 2750 tonnes of 250mm thick gravel pavement, complete drainage works.
  • Daysdale S Bends - Works recommenced following Council allocation of additional funding.
  • Corowa – Mulwala Cycleway: Works resumed with approx. 16km of gravel pavement laid. Rain halting works on a regular basis.
  • FCR Program - Cullivel Road Work commenced on the reconstruction of a 2 Km section of the existing pavement.
  • FCR Program - Balldale Road Funding agreement signed.
  • Maintenance Grading Program - Maintenance Grading Program has continued where possible. Many roads are unable to be graded due to the amount of rainfall resulting in water laying in potholes and tabledrains: Naughtins Road, Jamiesons Road, Daysdale Walbundrie Road. Stevens Road, Kelly’s Road, Woodside Road, Euro Glen Road, Creighton’s Road, Mallon’s Road, Harvey’s Road.
  • Tabledrain Maintenance - Tabledrain Maintenance on sealed and unsealed roads in urban and rural areas.
  • Sealed Roads Pothole repairs – due to the high rainfall during winter, many potholes/defects are appearing on the sealed road network. Two extra patching trucks (1 Urana 1 Corowa) have been made up in house to get on top of the numerous defects. Council’s new Jetpatcher has arrived and is in service.
  • Quarries Daysdale – commence crushing of 65000 tonnes for Capital Works Program. Balldale – Drill and Blast 45000 tonnes for Capital Works Program.
  • Roadside Shoulder Slashing - Program continuing as required and as weather permits.
  • Covid 19 - Work Crews continue with high productivity output with some changes to work methods.
  • Sundry Gang FLR Program - Traffic Facilities in conjunction with Construction teams, various Customer Requests. Footpath repairs. Traffic control for construction crews & contractors where required.
  • Heavy Trucks - Support Grader Gangs & Construction Gangs on maintenance - hauling spoil, gravel, and sand.
  • Daysdale Flood Event - On Saturday morning, January 8, roads were flooded from a rain event near Goombargana Hill from January 6. Federation Way south of Daysdale Township and Urana-Lockhart road were both closed until late afternoon when water levels had receded to allow light traffic vehicles to pass through, Council on call staff responded to close roads and set up detours.
  • Corowa Flood Event - In the early hours of Sunday morning, January 30, a rainfall event from 160 to 180+mm resulted in flooding of residences, Council roads and drainage infrastructure from North West of Corowa Township through to South Corowa causing significant damage. At the time of this report, Council outdoor staff are assisting residents with the clean-up of affected areas, clearing roads, repairing and clearing drainage outfalls and collating data on roads for repairs.
