When Liz retired, she became one of the original Ambassadors for Federation Council’s Ageing Well Advisory Committee.

After joining the committee, Liz said it became apparent that there were very few opportunities for exercising for the over 55's. As an ex super fit professional ice-skater, Liz was looking for physical activities that were fun, but also tailored to the interests and abilities of an older demographic.

Aged 74, Liz happily did a Gentle Exercise training course with Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) and became a volunteer Active Ageing leader. Eight years later, Liz continues to facilitate HAPI Movers at the Mulwala Hall on a Thursday at 10 am.

“I am still taking weekly classes and once a month the local kindergarten kids join us for 20 minutes,” says Liz. “We dance, step, waltz, stretch, laugh a lot & keep fit!”

Liz is a big advocate that exercise benefits are not just physical; they are also mental and emotional. Liz believes that regular physical activity can help combat depression, anxiety, and loneliness that group exercises provide social interaction and a sense of community, which are vital for mental and emotional well-being.

“At our classes we believe that social interaction and increased confidence are just as important to help break the stereotypes of aging in society today. The classes are enjoyable, because our members are all residents of the Federation area, ageing well together!”

Aged 77, Liz was offered a new career, facilitating the Vitality Passport Program for Back on Track Physiotherapy in Corowa teaching over 55’s how to age well with exercising, socialising, water, protein and calcium.  Five years on, Liz is still taking the program and enjoying every minute.

Aged 78, Liz trained again with MLHD, this time to have the opportunity to become an Aqua Exercise Leader at the Corowa Aquatic Centre. Liz in 2025, reached the epic milestone of having taken over 100 aqua classes.

“I see the amazing results the water exercises can have,” explains Liz. Aqua Exercise is currently offered six times a week at the centre, with Liz running two classes on a Tuesday and one on a Friday. Liz thinks “This is a win-win for me as I keep others fit and healthy whilst keeping super fit myself!”

Liz is challenging two ageing stereotypes, one by returning to the workforce post retirement into meaningful work, and by showing that you are never too old to take up exercise and make positive changes to the way you age.

Liz is now 82 years old and feels fantastic. One of Liz’s mottos is “Take care of your body and it will take care of you.”
