Exempt Development

What is Exempt Development?

Some minor building renovations or works do not require planning or building approval. They fall into a category called 'exempt development'. Exempt development is defined as a development that is done on certain residential, commercial and industrial properties that results in very low impact. A few examples of this are: decks, garden sheds, carports, fences, repairing a window or painting a house.

Approval from Council is not required, providing your building project meets specific development standards. The standards are specified in the State Policy for Exempt and Complying Development, which can be viewed at the NSW Legislation website or:
